When you are told that you are going to have major surgery it always leaves you feeling very vulnerable. You are in a place where the control over your life is taken away; your life is placed in the hands of the medical profession. I experienced major surgery a few years ago. As I was lying there in the operation theatre, suddenly, for a split second, I saw this picture of outstretched arms in my head. For me that symbolised: It will be fine, you will be okay.
After having that period in hospital, it awakened new memories from my life. It made me realise that the spirit world I believe in constantly has been giving me good things, but quite often I have decided not to allow that beautiful resource to come into my life. Often, we do not see the things we have or are given, most of the time we just focus on the things we do not have. We feel as if we are being ignored by the higher powers What if we could stand back from what we think we must have sometimes, clear our minds and spend time to look at the beautiful things we have within and around us? We do not have to look further than that.
As I look back over my life, I can see many of the beautiful things I have missed along the way. I did not always see what they were giving. That is a pity. Sometimes I can feel a little guilty, because I took for granted the beautiful things around me. Where I have been very busy over the years, sometimes I have also not paid much attention to my needs and myself. I might think I do, but then I realise that sometimes I do not give myself enough time to take in the nourishment that life offers. I realise too how many good friends I have and how I, over the years, have not been able to give nourishment to these friendships. I must prioritise, because the friends I have give a lot.
“When we complain about not having this or that, we often forget that all we need is already walking beside us.
I think we all, from time to time, have to remind ourselves that life is not just about work. There has to be a balance. The things I want can only come to me if I give myself time to create new things, from my heart. That does not just apply to work; it can be privately, spiritually or professionally. These three aspects need to have an equal place, and I have to make them work together.
From time to time we all need to upgrade ourselves. When we complain about not having this or that, we often forget that all we need is already walking beside us. The more I make a point of opening my eyes I realise that; the problem is just that I am blind to it.
To practice becoming more conscious of what is within and around us – What do you think of that as a new year’s resolution?
