Gamla Byskolan – Now and Then
The Old Village School (Gamla Byskolan) used to be the local village school for those who lived in Fanthyttan and the surrounding area. We have therefore endeavoured to retain much of its original character when developing it into a course and retreat centre. The centre is situated in a beautiful part of Bergslagen.
The original school was built sometime between 1855 and 1859. In those days there were two classrooms, a two-room apartment with a kitchen and a one-room apartment with a kitchen.

The Garden
In the spring of 2005, when Terry bought the old village school here in Fanthyttan, no one could ever imagine that the garden be what it is today. Where there now is a big lawn there used to be a football field, the forest had closed in on the garden. Terry saw the possibility of creating a wonderful place. He started by planting grass on the gravel field, created flower beds and the idea of a pond was born. The pond is today a central place in the garden and means a lot to us. It has been blessed by a Buddhist monk to commemorate the victims of the tsunami in 2004.
Today the garden offers serenity and solitude, but at the same time there is an opportunity for activity and recreation. To honour all the children who have passed through the school over many decades, we have kept the swings in the garden.
The most recent contribution to the garden is a wooden hut that can be used by guests on conferences, retreats etc. The garden has a purpose and offers our guests a complete experience.
